Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) is a highly efficient underwater dredging vessel, mainly used for channel dredging,port construction, land reclamation and other projects. Main components
Cutter Head
The front end is equipped with a rotating auger with teeth or blades, which can cut and loosen the mud, clay and even soft rock on the seabed to adapt to different geological conditions.

Mud suction pipe and mud pump
The suction pipe is connected to the rear of the auger, and the centrifugal mud pump generates vacuum suction to suck the mud into the pipeline.

Mud transportation system
The mud is transported to the mud discharge area (such as the filling area or barge) through a pipeline. Long-distance transportation requires the assistance of a relay pump station.

Positioning and movement system

Anchor positioning: Traditional method, adjusting the ship's position through anchor cables.

Pile positioning: Using steel piles to alternately fix and swing, suitable for narrow waters.

DP dynamic positioning: Automatically maintain position through thrusters with high accuracy.

Hull and power system
It comes with a diesel engine or electric motor to power the auger, mud pump and propulsion system.

Working Principle

The cutter suction dredger primarily accomplishes dredging tasks through the coordinated operation of a cutter device and a dredge pump. The ladder frame at the bow extends below the water surface, where the rotating cutter head—powered by a drive system—cuts and agitates underwater sediments, loosening compacted soil, sand, or even rock layers. Simultaneously, the onboard dredge pump generates strong suction pressure, drawing the loosened slurry through the suction pipe and transporting it via discharge pipelines over distances ranging from hundreds to thousands of meters to designated areas, such as s poil grounds or reclamation sites. This integrated process—excavation, transportation, and discharge— is completed seamlessly without requiring additional vessels for intermediate transfers, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.
